RIFT: Patch 2.4 – Beyond Infinity – Goes Live

RIFT has been the poster child for how to successfully switch subscription models from P2P into F2P. They saw an over 300% rise in the amount of players active on a daily basis and continue to launch content, both in the item shop and in the game for all players to enjoy.

Here are the key features added during today’s content update. (Links to the full updated patch notes and the lore for this update are at the end of the article.)

The Dendrome’s secrets have been revealed: Inyr’Kta, Hive Queen of the Architects, prepares to unleash titan-forged colossi against the planes! Stopping her requires control of the Infinity Gate, the fateful god engine that first drew the Blood Storm to Telara. Aid Uriel and Kira in their race to open the portal, then leave Telara for the Plane of Earth … and a dire reckoning with the forces that lie beyond.

RIFT 2.4 heralds the first chapter in a new war between the elemental planes. Conflict erupts in two new raids plus a new dungeon and Chronicle, all while the Ascended rise to new heights of power with Rank 90 PvP armor, weapons, and more. Prepare for battle with world-breaking constructs – a Planar War awaits!

Inyr’Kta has fled to Planebreaker Bastion, a war foundry at the heart of the Architect Empire within the Plane of Earth. There, protected by powerful thralls, she directs the construction of a doomsday automaton. Destroy Inyr’Kta and her towering construct before she can conquer the elemental planes … and our own.

Planebreaker Bastion will be unlocked shortly after RIFT 2.4 goes live!

As the Ascended rush to control the Infinity Gate, its ancient magic stirs to life and summons furious enemies from the planes beyond. Defeat Breaker X1, Swarm Lord Twins Mordan and Viktus, and a Karthan juggernaut to secure the gate and pave the way to Planebreaker Bastion.

A stroke of cosmic unluck has given rise to a nightmarish Realm of the Fae, a dream world where Atrophinius’ deepest fears take on physical form and threaten Telara itself. Chimeric versions of familiar foes now await the Ascended, grinding axes (and teeth and claws) for the twisted battles to come. Read more here!

Adventure through an alternate Telara where a victorious Laethys reigns from the depths of her volcanic lair. Sabotage the dragon’s plans for invasion by laying low Maklamos the Scryer, Rusila Dreadblade, and Laethys herself!

Ascend to new heights of power with PvP Rank 90 armor and weapons.

Unite with Ascended from all realms for adventure on-demand!

The Barbershop gets a makeover: Choose from new colors and hairstyles for your character.

RIFT: F2P Model Finds Major Success, Thanks to Raptr (VentureBeat.com)

For folks who continue to think that “going F2P” means a game has completely failed, RIFT is a stellar example of how changing a subscription model can instigate a massive success. RIFT saw an over 300% increase in daily active players after the F2P announcement. I hope they have learned a ton from this and deal with upcoming ArcheAge appropriately!

Here’s a fact that will surprise no one: People like getting free stuff.

Video game publisher Trion Worlds and gaming community Raptr recently joined forces to promote the free-to-play (F2P) relaunch of the struggling massively multiplayer online role-playing game Rift. Using the Raptr Rewards loyalty program, Trion gave away free copies of Rift and in-game items to the social network’s more than 18 million players. The two companies then worked together to analyze player data collected since first announcing the F2P transition in mid-May.

Not surprisingly, these numbers are pretty great.

Trion Worlds says the number of daily active players jumped 300 percent after announcing Rift’s free-to-play transition, a 133 percent increase over several other major online titles at the time. Once the F2P transition completed in June, players who had been inactive for more than 14 days came back at a rate of 900 percent. Trion also says the game’s overall revenue increased more than five times.

A MMO finding success after going free-to-play is nothing new. Back in May, Electronic Arts president of labels Frank Gibeau revealed during an earnings call that Star Wars: The Old Republic more than doubled its monthly revenue after making the switch. But what is unusual is a publisher teaming up with a social networking site to promote such a transition. Jim Butler, Trion Worlds’ senior director of global marketing, says the partnership was invaluable.

“I think the one thing that it’s helped is just in visibility,” he said. “You know, instead of Trion going out there and saying, ‘Hey, look at all the cool stuff Rift is doing.’ Now we’ve got Trion and Raptr going out there and saying, ‘Oh, my god, look at all this cool stuff that Rift and Trion are doing.’ It just increases our reach for everything that we’re doing.”

The promotion was undoubtedly beneficial to Raptr as well. Director of marketing Donnie Wang says the site’s Rift community more than doubled in size after the rewards program launched.

“It was definitely interesting to really try to help Rift not only engage both their existing and lapsed players but also trying to reach out and getting new players to come into their game before they were ultimately going to make that switch to free-to-play,” he said.

Acquiring new players and reacquiring old ones is a constant battle for MMOs. There’s a natural ebb and flow to subscriber numbers, Butler says. Every disruptive event, whether it’s a new console launch or a rival’s content patch, impacts it.

“One of the things about MMO gaming is that a lot of gamers play multiple games,” Butler says. ”What happens is there’s kind of a cycle, a method to their madness, where they’ll come back and they’ll play Rift and then suddenly they’ll go off and play their other MMO, the one that is their deep, dark secret, and they’ll play that because that game had a new content update or whatever else. Then they’re waiting for something else to happen to bring them back to Rift or yet another MMO that they play. So, you know, acquiring and then reacquiring is just part of the natural process by which the MMO business goes.”

While Butler believes Trion would’ve had great success with Rift’s relaunch with or without Raptr, he says their partnership made everything better, and the publisher plans to keep working with Raptr to expand the rewards program to more of its games.

Wang also believes the partnership is a natural fit. The two companies share a similar philosophy, he says, a player-first approach to community building. “Developers shouldn’t necessarily think first about how to monetize off of their players,” he says. “Think about what’s best for the player first and then the money will come later.”

“That’s the big secret in getting players back,” Butler says. “Listening to the community, giving them what they need, giving them what they want. And starting the cycle all over again.”

ArcheAge: Trion Community Mod Offers Update (ArcheAgeSource.com)

It’s been several weeks since Trion Worlds first posted their ArcheAge website and invited players to sign up for the beta. Yesterday, Community Manager James “Elrar” Nichols posted an article on the ArcheAge Source forums. That article is below. Enjoy!

Hey everyone,

It’s been a while since I made a post here outside of the Shoutbox so I thought I’d make it one about a topic that I’m sure is on many of your minds. “When will the wait be over?”

I wish I could give you the date and time today – but the ones we have in mind could still change, even if they are the best laid plans of mice & men!

A little bit about those plans

There’re many things we need to accomplish in order to successfully release ArcheAge to players in North America in Europe. Some hurdles are bigger than others and, in some cases, determine our ability to move forward towards launch.

The first really big one, in progress right now, is working with XL to integrate the game itself with our account/billing platform. This is essential to enabling server access for anyone outside of our office – we do not pass GO, we do not collect $200 until this very important phase has been completed. It is the top priority but, as you can imagine, it is extraordinarily complex with many people and moving parts involved.

To a similar end, XL Games is coming over here very soon and is helping us to set up our server architecture to run ArcheAge according to its design.

Of course, we also need to localize the game so you’re not playing in Korean. We’ve got the first large chunk of localization done, and we’re working on the updates and doing edit passes to make sure that the localization is as good as we can possibly make it.

Once these significant milestones have been accomplished closed testing can begin – our plan is to be at this point within the next few months!

Testing & You

No doubt the very mention of testing gets some of you excited! Perhaps you’ve even just clicked my name with plans to send a brief PM explaining why you would be the perfect candidate (it’s easier to sign up at http://www.archeagegame.com, but I do appreciate the letters). We’re just as excited to get to the point where we can invite external testers but expect the closed testing period to last at least a few months.

What’s changing?

I realize that no shortage of your eagerness for more info has to deal with what aspects of ArcheAge we are modifying or changing.

Know this: Any “Westernization” that occurs will likely be very minimal and done to improve usability/understanding of mechanics based on conventions we’ve grown accustomed to that differ from those of Korean gamers.

Don’t expect entirely new features exclusive to the NA/EU release or sweeping changes to mechanics – what you can expect are small tweaks to the way some existing features function. ArcheAge is already an amazing game, that’s why we have always been excited publish it.’

It’s also very important to keep in mind that this game is constantly changing. There have been so many awesome features since ArcheAge launched in Korea and we want to make sure we have as many of them as possible available at release. Changing around mechanics and the fundamental systems that fuel the game would only increase the amount of time it would take to incorporate new and future updates – not a good thing!

While we’re on this topic, I think it’s important that I point out where the most significant change and work is going to take place: The Text.

We’re talking over 1,000,000 words AND climbing!

It’s no small feat to achieve and the biggest challenge here is the fact that there are many distinct differences between Western & Korean cultures that we need to take into account. Everything from value systems to how we greet and interact with people based on our relationship to them is different. This matters a lot to language and the way things are written/expressed which means that localization is not as simple as running everything through Google Translate – at least not if we want an entertaining experience… well, one we can understand that is :)

What’s next?

Expect things to stay quiet for a few more weeks at least – until accounts are able to login to the game through our platform we’ll be busy planning live streams and the future roll out of content, not to mention reading a lot (A LOT) of text. You’ll know when things are really getting going, the noise will be deafening!

Until then, keep the feedback coming & thanks as always for your continued support of ArcheAge – I realize after possibly YEARS of waiting this may not come easily to some but enjoy these early days, cherish them even. They will not last, I guarantee it :D

RIFT: Summerfest Starts July 25th

Awwww, yeah! Bahmi in bathing “suits”! With five major features for the festivities, RIFT is hoping to “make a splash” (queue *eye rolls*) with its summer celebration. Given RIFT was the most-played Raptr game of June, this could keep the well-crafted MMORPG continuing along swimmingly. *cough*

Pack your suits and bait your lines: the season of high-summer adventures returns to Telara on July 25! With the worst of the Architects’ threats yet to be revealed, you can rest and relax – or romp through scavenger hunts, battle the forces of Swarmlord Karhgroth, fish, explore, and catch rare companions – all under a balmy summer sky.

Key Features

Join your friends for scavenger hunts throughout Telara – ride a barrel down Scarlet Gorge Falls, risk life and lips to plant a kiss on some of Telara’s greatest villains, and more. You’ll have to follow the clues, though – hunt objectives aren’t marked on your map!

Unique and adorable critters return to zones across the continent of Mathosia. Catch and befriend up to 11 special companions, from black bunnies to striped prairie dogs and colorful cobras.

Summer fashion’s alive at the RIFT Store! Sport a variety of swimsuits and exclusive items including Sunset, a feisty avian companion.

Camp out to earn the title “the Counselor” and catch Summer Sunfish from special nodes throughout the event. As you complete Summerfest quests, you’ll earn Friendship Bracelets and Merit Badges you can trade in for seasonal loot.

During Summerfest, Daily Login Gifts have a chance of including 25-75 RIFT Credits. If you’re a Patron, you have an even higher chance of receiving free Credits!

During all the pre-launch hype for Defiance, the developers and TV cast made it clear that players would have opportunities to crossover into the the TV show from the game. Defiance: Earn Rewards When You Recruit Friends

Please go to the official page and recruit your friends from there. This is just a friendly post notifying you of the brand new recruitment rewards opportunity. (I’m having bad flashbacks to an earlier giveaway.)

Invite your friends via email or post on Facebook and Twitter. As friends use your invite to register for Ark Hunter Rewards, they will be linked to your account and you will unlock the title and Lock Box shown below. When they buy and log into the game for the first time or make their first store purchase, you get more loot! Below are the rewards you could claim.

EXCLUSIVE IN-GAME TITLE: VBI HEADHUNTER – send 1st set of 5 invites

BASIC LOCK BOX – 1st invited friend signs up for ark hunter rewards

+2 INVENTORY SLOTS – 5 total invited friends sign up for ark hunter rewards

EXCLUSIVE E-REP HEAVY TROOPER OUTFIT – 1st invited friend logs in to the game for the first time

EXCLUSIVE HELLBLAZER NOMAD TRUCK – 5 invited friends log in to the game for the first time

TIER 3 LOCK BOX – each time an additional invited friend logs in to the game for the first time

You’ll be notified each time a new reward has been unlocked, and you can claim them in the Defiance Store under CLAIM ITEMS.

Who can I recruit to join me in Defiance?

You can invite any of your friends who are not already playing Defiance. If you have a friend who has already signed up and is playing the game, that friend will not be counted towards earning rewards.

Do I have to complete these rewards in order?

No. If, for example, if you invite five friends to sign up for the Ark Hunter Rewards Program and one of them signs up, buys that same day, and starts playing, you will unlock the exclusive outfit before the in-game title.

How does the final reward work?

The final reward is granted to you each time an additional invited friend logs into the game for the first time over and above the first five friends you recruit. So friend 6, 7, 8, 9, etc. all earn you another Tier 3 Lock Box.

Do I ONLY have to sign up five friends to unlock all these rewards?

No. You should invite as many friends as you can. Not all of them will sign up immediately, so the more you invite the more likely you are to quickly accumulate rewards. Big tip: if you invite a friend, make sure you follow up with them and get them to take the first step and sign up for Ark Hunter Rewards. It then helps if you encourage them to buy and jump into the game. Let them know that you’ll get all this cool stuff if they do!

Why should my friends sign up anyway?

They also get rewards! Every one of your invited friends who signs up for the Ark Hunter Rewards Program gets several in-game rewards. Plus they level up automatically when they create their Ark Hunter Rewards account. It’s a win/win relationship.

What is the Ark Hunter Rewards Program?

The Ark Hunter Rewards Program is a loyalty program whereby Ark Hunters gather and input six digit codes that are scattered and hidden across hundreds of Defiance items including trailers, screenshots, and web pages. As these codes are entered they accumulate to unlock 15 different levels of in-game items and rewards for FREE! You can check out the Ark Hunter Rewards page here.

Defiance: New DLC for Game; 2nd Season “Go” for TV Show (DigitalTrends.com)

Originally, I was pretty hyped about Defiance – when I thought it was an MMORPG. Once I played the beta and realized it was really a third-person shooter in a persistent world, my interest waned. However, I have been enjoying very much the TV show and am thrilled the new franchise has been renewed for a second season!Despite some launch issues, the game has been doing very well especially since it’s a cross-platform release (Xbox 360, PS3, and PC). In fact, it was played more than Guild Wars 2 and Star Wars: The Old Republic last month according to Raptr’s metrics. As both the TV show and game are doing well, you can expect the DLCs to start rolling in as a way for both version of the franchise to continue moving ahead.

Defiance was heralded as a new form of interactive entertainment by Trion Worlds when the game was first announced in conjunction with the television show of the same name from the Syfy Channel. Now that that the television show has been renewed for a second season and Trion is preparing the first DLC installment for the game, we can see more of the crossover happening – at least in one direction. The extremely popular Castithan race from the show is being added as a playable race in the “Castithan Charge Pack,” which includes the iconic charge blade weapon as well. But that’s just part of what’s coming for players. Some of the new content will be free and some you’ll have to get in the paid DLC, but it’s clear that Trion is dedicated to listening to both fans of the show and the game to keep people happy.

New Race. Here’s where I shamefully admit, and this is as a massive science fiction nerd, that I have yet to watch Defiance. Please don’t mention this to Grant Bowler, lest I feel his wrath. However, I have friends that love the show (including others at DT), and they continue to lambast me for not yet tuning in. Last month it was announced that the show has been renewed for a second season, bringing 13 new episodes next year. That should give me ample time to catch up on some required viewing. Trion also announced last month that the “Castithan Charge Pack” would be the first of fiveannounced DLC packs, giving players a taste of new content that has been influenced by the show itself. This pack includes the Castithan race, a Battle Arena, charge weapons, and a new four-person vehicle so you and your buddies can now ride along together.

Big. Bad. Boom. While I might not have seen Defiance yet, I have certainly played it, and Trion let us get a brief taste of the DLC during E3. The real punch behind this DLC pack is the Castithans, which have been immensely popular in the television show thanks to their arrogant attitudes and Elvish appearance. Thankfully, Trion has included the feature to convert your existing character to Castithan if you so desire, meaning you won’t lose any experience if you really want to swap races. One of the most immediate indications of the new content are the Sieges, which you will spot randomly on your map. In our demo, these were spots being overrun by the Volge, and you could repair/upgrade turrets and defend these spots to earn experience and new charge weapons as well. The final DLC will involve Plaguers as well in these Siege events, and they increase in difficulty with each approaching wave of baddies.

More and more. There is also an Arena mode coming in the new DLC, which we didn’t see, and this will be an area where players can earn reputation and buy cool new weapons and toys, including the charge blade. There is a new Monolith Arkfall event coming as well, which gives you the ability to fight the Dark Matter, along with the enormous boss who was previously guarding the Golden Gate bridge. This baddie is a gigantic mech, and he has hardpoints on his armor that you will have to break through before taking him down. Luckily you’ll have those new charge weapons with you to help out, and bunch of fellow players as well. This bad guy can be tough to take down, as you have to disable each of his legs first and expose his hardpoints, and then whale on him to take him down. Along the way, Dark Matter will drop down to challenge you, and to try and control some of the points on the map. Don’t let ‘em do that.

I want my DLC! So what exactly does this new DLC get you? Here’s a breakdown: You get this as part of the DLC for free:

  • Access to the new Charge Weapons Class and Castithan Blades
  • Access to Sieges, a new Open World Game Mode
  • Access to the new Monolith Major Arkfall
  • Access to a new PvP Map – Military Academy
  • Join a friend into the Battle Arenas Game Mode
  • Duel your friends and neighbors in the Duels Game Mode
  • Enemies, lockboxes, and events can drop Charge Weapons
  • Select a new voice for you character
  • Multitude of game improvements from UI to content

You can buy these individually from the store:

  • New Mods that tint the color of your Castithan Blade
  • Lockboxes have a chance to get Charge Weapons
  • More versions of the Raptor, the new 4 player truck of doomed compensation
  • Character Customization changes: Appearance change, name change, or everything change

The Castithan Charge Pack and accompanying update content will be available “soon,” according to Trion Worlds, and more content will continue to come out in the months ahead. Players can purchase the DLC piecemeal, or pick up a season pass for $40 that will give you access to all five pieces of content that will eventually be out.
